I have a 1969 air cooled beetle and i cant get it to start or hold a charge i put a newer battery in it it stared right up and then it died several days later the lights come on and everything but they are dim waht i need to know is ,is it the voltage regulator cause someone put my battery in backwards and dr5ove it around could the regulator have fried or is it the generator?
You need to phrase your question clearer. From what I understand, is that you fitted a new battery which was incorrectly installed. If the battery was installed incorrectly and the car was started and run, I would suspect that the battery is damaged, rather than the regulator or generator. When you say you cannot get it to hold a charge, does that mean if you charge it with a battery charger, it does not hold the charge or when you have driven the car around it is not charging. If it does not hold a charge after charging with a battery charger, your new battery is damaged. Replacement is the only option.
Are you sure that you have a generator and not an alternator fitted. If you have an alternator, you probably have blown the diodes.
When you drive, does the charging light come on (red light in speedometer). If this light is coming on then your problem lies with the generator/alternator or regulator.
When the engine is running, the generator can only turn in one direction and it will push out a charge so it largely depends on how long you drove the car in this condition.
Starting point. Get the battery tested and charged (out of car) put back in the car. Then check if charge light is burning, if yes then get the generator checked out.
