Why breath is important

It is not a simple matter of inhaling and exhaling. If you do not have proper air in your lungs, you voice can crack and tail off. You may have problems reaching the higher notes. It is easier for your voice to go flat or off pitch. Proper air in the lungs allows for a stronger and dynamic voice. It can easily be the difference between failure and success with any vocal application.

Ways to breathe

Most people do not get the most from their breathing, during the day. The majority of people breathe through their diaphragm. They do this by raising and lowering the chest. Many vocalists are taught to lower their breathing. They start by extending the stomach and completely filling the lungs. This can dramatically increase your lung capacity. Some people are taught to use a breath control method. This involves being aware of the entire process of taking in air. This also can increase lung capacity.

There are many exercises designed to increase the efficiency of taking in and releasing air. Some involve visualization. Others may stress exact technique.

Visualize

One visualization method is to see the air that you take in. Imagine it as a very dense and heavy fog. When you breathe in, allow this heavy fog to drop to your stomach. When you exhale, it is important to completely clear the lungs of air. Imagine there is a feather in front of you. As you exhale, you are keeping a feather in the air. Continue to exhale as you blow the feather higher and higher. Continue these breaths until you can no longer exhale. This will cause you to take a very deep breath to replace all of the air that is gone.

Complete breath

A method that does not require imagination is similar to the yoga complete breath. Extend the stomach and straighten the back as you inhale. Inhale as deeply as you possibly can and hold it for ten seconds. Exhale very slowly. As you exhale, continue to empty your lungs. Place your hands on your stomach and gently push out more air. Do not stop when you think you are empty. Continue to puff out as much as you can. When you can no longer breathe out, you will take in a very deep breath.

When it's hot out,and I don't have air conditioning, what's the best way to cool my house?

I have a fan, I have water, I have a freezer, I have ice, etc. What are some techniques for cooling down the house? Which is best, i.e. most effective.

To cool your house without air conditioning you need to start in the evening after the sun goes down.

Open all the windows in the house. This will cool your home overnight to the lowest temperature.

Early in the morning, before the sun has been up very long, close all the windows and pull down the shades. You will keep the cool air you captured overnight in the house.

It's important to give the house the overnight hours to cool down. A couple of hours won't do it. You may want to put a fan in the highest window in the house, blowing out. This will help draw the cool air into the rooms on the lower level. When you do your dawn window closing, take the fan out of the window.

You can sleep better at night with a damp sheet over you with a fan blowing on it. Take a cool shower at least twice a day.

During the day, use a fan to cool your body. Wear sandals and shorts and a loose cotton top. Try not to run the dishwasher or dryer. Do your cooking in a crock pot out on the patio and drink icy beverages.

It works even better if you can shade your south facing windows from the outside. You know those inexpensive, plastic roll down shades from the super stores. It keeps the sun from heating up the windows.

When your budget allows, buy one small air conditioner for one room. It will give you an oasis for those uncomfortable humid days.
