Singapore Botanic Gardens – Enamouring Sights in Every Corner
A uniquely tropical area of greenery nestled over an area of nearly 52 hectares; this luxuriant attraction is located close to the city centre. The Singapore Botanic Gardens is a cynosure of the country, which has been around for nearly 150 years. Founded in 1859 by the Agri-Horticultural Society, this beautiful land of shrubbery and foliage is the centre point for many attractions in Singapore.
The Singapore Botanic Grandees is home to many attractions, which will leave visitors awestruck. These attractions include The National Orchid Garden, Rainforest, Evolution Garden, Ginger Garden, Botany Centre and Tanglin Gate, Jacob Ballas Children's Garden, Saraca Stream Walk and the resident lakes that are Symphony Lake, Eco-Lake and Swan Lake.
The National Orchid Garden is home to a magnificent array of orchid variants. With over twenty thousand orchids showcased, it is home to several mini attractions throughout this beautiful area of the garden. These include The Burkill Hall & VIP Orchid Gardens, Orchidarium, Tan Hoon Siang Misthouse, Lady Yuen-Peng McNeice Bromeliad House and the Coolhouse. The The Burkill Hall & VIP Orchid Gardens, which used to be the plantation bungalow of the Burkill family, now is host to an exhibition garden for hybrid orchids named after important person who have visited the Singapore Botanical Gardens. Orchidarium is a true wonderment, where it is home to natural species of orchids and being a favourite for many orchid enthusiasts. The Tan Hoon Siang Misthouse on the other hand is home to a vibrant yet colourful collection of hybrid orchids such as the aromatic Vanda Mimi Plamer. The Lady Yuen-Peng McNeice Bromeliad House, named after the sponsor of this great attraction, is home to much of the Bromeliaceae species family. Furthermore visitors can also visit the Coolhouse which is set in a exotic ambience mimicking a tropical forest and are home to orchids which can normally be found in tropical settings.
The Singapore Botanic Garden is also home to a small rainforest, which is said to have been present prior to the founding of the gardens itself. This area of tropical greenery is nearly six hectares in size. Another attraction, which is educational, is the Evolution garden, which offers insight into the evolution of plant life on Earth over the ages. The Ginger Garden, which is situated, next to the National Orchid Garden is home to a hoard of sights, which includes the family of Zingiberaceae plants, the sparkling waterfalls as well as the resident restaurant.
Set in the centre of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, visitors can find the Botanic Centre and the Tanglin Gate. The Botany Centre is home to the Library of Botany & Herbiculture, The Singapore Herbarium, Orchid Breeding & Micropagation as well as Education Outreach/ Workshop classrooms. Recently the Tanglin Gate was revamped with a brand new image, with the removal of the iron cast gates and was given a modern look. An attraction which pleases the youn and toddler generations, is the Jacob Ballas Children's Garden which holds several play areas, tree houses, mazes and much more. Other attractions of this wondrous wonderland of foliage and shrubbery is the Saraca Stream Walk which is strewn with tropical plants on its banks as well as the serene lakes Symphony Lake, Eco-Lake and Swan lake which call the Singapore Botanic Gardens its home.

I would like to identify this plant?
When I visited India last November I got an opportunity to indulge in my favourite hobby - Photography. A friend, Salil, who lives out there accompanied me but Salil's strength is in IT and not Botany. His help in identifying this plant when I enquired ... "What type of plant is that Salil?" he said. "A Wild one" We both want to learn the correct name for this. I took the shot on the Road from Lonavala to Amby Valley, India in November.
