Defibrillators - The Most Important Life-saving Devices
Defibrillators are life-saving devices that are used to reinstate the heart to a normal rhythm when a sudden cardiac arrest takes place. The reason for a cardiac arrest is that the ventricles, which are the lower chambers of the heart, stop beating normally leading to a disorganized heart rhythm due to which the heart muscles start trembling, and the heart is not able to pump the blood properly to the brain, vital organs, and the cells of the body. Disturbed heart rhythm is technically called ventricular fibrillation (VF).
The chance of resuscitation decreases by 10 percent for every minute that the ventricular fibrillation is allowed to happen without any treatment. As such, if the treatment is delayed by ten minutes, the person can die. The only effective way of stopping this disturbed heart activity is by using a defibrillator. This device can bring back the normal rhythm of the heart, irrespective of whether the person is old or young. It is used to treat heart disease of different kinds, such as ventricular tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmias, and ventricular fibrillation.
A defibrillator is a device that treats the heart problem by delivering a therapeutic dose of electrical energy to the affected area of the heart. The electric current depolarizes critical masses of the heart muscle and terminates the arrhythmia. This helps the person's own natural pacemaker to re-establish the normal sinus rhythm in the sinoatrial node of the heart.
Types Of Defibrillators
Defibrillators are of different types, such as implanted, external or transvenous. Some external units are known as automated external defibrillators (AED). These are very useful because they are simple to use, and they can be operated by anyone if the instructions are followed. If a person is in a hospital and if he suffers a ventricular fibrillation, immediate defibrillation will be done by the hospital staff and the person's life will be saved. However, if the person suffers sudden cardiac arrest at his home or somewhere else, an AED can be of great help. A computerized voice guides the person on how to operate it when electronic pads, supplied with the defibrillator, are placed on the patient's chest according to the directions given by the voice. The patient's heart rhythm will be checked by the defibrillator, which will decide whether the shock is necessary. If so, the voice will tell the person when to press an indicated button to send the shock. The machine will then ask the person to perform CPR.
Since automatic external defibrillators are so easy to use and since they have been known to save many lives, it is essential that they should be placed at all important locations which are frequented by many people. Public access defibrillation (PAD) has also been introduced at many public places by hanging AEDs on walls so that they can easily be used on a person if he suffers a heart attack. The most common locations are airports, train stations, shopping malls, or other busy locations.
Defibrillators can also be classified into two types: mono-phasic and biphasic. In the mono-phasic system, the electrical impulse is sent quickly from one electrode to the other in a single direction whereas in the biphasic system, the direction of the electrical impulse varies and it completes one cycle in about 10 milliseconds.
Since AEDs are so useful and easy to use, it should be the endeavor of the government to make defibrillators as common as fire extinguishers in public places so that more and more lives can be saved.
