What are the functions and misconceptions of functions of an isolated patient "ground" used in DIGITAL EEG?

The fact that storage/display of the data is "digital" doesn't matter to this process. The sensors are still acquiring analog data (and weak data at that) -- it's just being digitized downstream after amplification. The standard checks for ground leakage, cord resistance, etc., should be performed as for any analog EEG.

Every sensor (other than balanced input sensors) will require a ground reference. The IPG is a return only for the EEG electrodes. It is not connected to "earth" (hence it is referred to as "isolated") - specifically to avoid any return path through the patient in the event that an equipment fault should occur that would cause dangerous earth referenced voltage to appear at the EEG electrodes.

At 120VAC, I believe there should be less than 10uA rms leakage possible.

I suppose one misconception is that the patient is being "grounded" ("earthed"), although that would be precisely the opposite of the desired result.
