i became a dental assistance about 2 weeks ago by luck .. i never studied it .. but now i want to learn as much as possible i dont wanna lose this job ...what instruments do u use when doing a composite? and extraction,and white and silver filling .. please HELP .. if u dont kno (tips will help)
I've trained many dental assistants and the best dental assistants were the ones that were trained off the street like you or the ones coming directly from school.
The best attributes of a great dental assistant is willingness to learn, ability to learn, and attitude.
Willingness to learn: Ask questions! No question is bad question but PLEASE choose the right question at the appropriate time. An example of an inappropriate question at the wrong time is "What's all that blood?!" Definitely keep comments to yourself. "That doesn't look right." "I can see why people say it hurts." "If it were me, I would just pull it." Definitely, do NOT say these things.
Ability to learn: I've had many different dental assistants with different learning curves. Some had fast learning curves which makes it easy but they seem to burn out quicker. Others have very slow learning curves which frustrates the dentist. Don't know which one you are but keep in mind that most dentists use the same instruments and methods for the same procedures. Once you get to know the instruments and the sequence the dentist likes to use them in, then anticipate! (Remember that each dentist will do things their own way. My husband and I are dentists and we do things differently.) Learn to anticipate: An excellent dental assistant will have the next instrument ready before the dentist asks for it. You will start off with the dentist asking you to hand him certain instruments. Once you get the nack of passing instruments to him and repeating procedures, you should be able to anticipate his next move. Once you get good, he shouldn't have to ask you for an instrument. You will just be passing instruments and not even thinking about it. Remember cleanliness and organization is EVERYTHING. If you keep a clean table, you will be able to organize and pick up and give your instruments quickly.
Attitude. Always keep a positive attitude. Always praise your boss in FRONT of the patients. "That filling is beautiful". "That crown is beautiful". "He/She does such a great job." "You were a great patient." Remember that patients are more comfortable confiding in you than with your boss. Always shed a positive light on him and the practice. NEVER DIAGNOSE a patient. "Sounds like you need a root canal. Sounds like you need a cavity." ALWAYS let the dentist diagnose. "I can't tell you what you have. The dentist will take a look at your tooth and make that determination."
Develop a repertoire with the patients but when the dentist is in the room, QUIT the chit chat. Be prepared. Always look your best. Always keep a positive attitude (even when things aren't going right by the dentist or you.) Keep everything organized and clean and once you get the techniques mastered, always be one step ahead.
One of my favorite dental assistants will seat an emergency patient, take an x-ray and let me know when it's done. I'll be in my office and bring up the x-ray. She can tell me the tooth number and what the patient's chief complaint is. She has already taken an intraoral image (digital photo of the tooth). She says that she already talked to the patient about the possibility of root canals and crown. I'll walk in the room and the picture of the tooth is on our large flat screens and the patient is educated and is reading up on root canals vs extractions. I pretty much have to acknowledge whether or not it needs a root canal or not. The office manager will discuss finances with the patient and while this is occuring, the dental assistant is preparing the room for a root canal procedure. When I get back into the room, everything is laid out and organized. I love it. I never have to ask her for any instrument and the procedure goes smoothly.
For most dental assistants this takes anywhere from 2-6 months to learn. Great dental assistants will lessen a lot of stress to the dentist. My assistant does such a great job I coudn't imagine my practice without he (and she knows it). Good luck.
