Clinical coding, also known as medical coding is the analysis of clinical statements and assigning codes to them for reimbursement from insurance companies or federal agencies. The numerical codes help the payers to complete the necessary paper work to pay healthcare facilities or physician offices. In order to get proper reimbursement, a clinical coding professional must understand the coding guidelines properly. A formal training in coding also makes it easy to understand medical terminologies and diagnosis concepts.
Clinical coding or medical coding has a number of specialty tracks which include anesthesia, cardiology, emergency medicine, evaluation & management, family practice and internal medicine, ob-gyn, ophthalmology, optometry, pediatrics, urology etc. Coders usually choose one specialty, but it’s not too uncommon to find coders working with multiple specialties at the same time.
The primary object of any clinical coder or medical coder is to understand the intended use of the numerical codes - CPT, ICD-9 and HCPCS codes. The clinical coding industry is fast changing one, which requires coders to be on their toes to maintain a pace with the modification and changes in codes. Attending conferences whenever you can is a good way to keep pace with the changes. They are also a good way to connect with industry experts and advanced-level professional coders.
Competency levels in clinical coding ranges from entry-level to intermediate to expert-level coders. Based on the level of expertise, clinical coders or medical coders can seek out a number of employment opportunities - at healthcare facilities, physician offices, and even insurance companies. A major chunk of coders prefer to work from home as it gives them the freedom to spend more time with their families. More than ever, the demand for certified professionals is quite high and the accompanying pay package too, is quite attractive.
