Help with sore irritated gums?
I went to the dentist on Friday, and he said that my gums looked a little irritated, but he felt that there was nothing wrong that couldn't be cured with a deep cleaning...
Well they couldn't get me an appointment with the hygienist until February, and since my gums were slightly bothering me, I went home and did a 'deep cleaning' myself. Really brushing, and flossing that area to make sure I got everything out of there. Now they hurt incredibly bad, and are 100x's more irritated. Did I make a huge mistake, or is this something that will more than likely fade in a few days?
And is there anything you can recommend to speed up the process, or help the pain for the moment?
Most likely, you've just irritated it with the bristles from the toothbrush. It will get better. In the meantime, do mild saltwater rinses....or if that makes you gag ( alot of my patients are like this) use Crest Pro Health. The reason I suggest this is, it is alcohol free so it won't further irritate your gums, it is anti bacterial and helps with gingivitis (swelling of the gums). For the pain, try taking some ibuprofen (if you are able) It is an anti-inflammatory and will also help with the swelling. You could also use a product called Orabase. you can get it at Walgreens and CVS. It is kind of like oragel, but it is a paste. and while oragel can cause further irritation, orabase will not.
