Lost and Damaged Packages Eliminated with White Glove Services
Customers expect more. Year on year customers are demanding and receiving better service not just at the point of sale but in after care too. The Post Office and low-cost overnight carriers simply not designed for careful handling of fragile goods or added value service. There are countless horror stories of flat screen TV's being sent in hope and getting destroyed on overnight services.
The reasons overnight services are inappropriate are two-fold. First, they are deliberately focused on track and trace at the lowest possible cost and involve too many people. To highlight this point, the work flow is, collection driver, depot warehouse man, trunk driver, hub warehouse man, another trunk driver, another depot warehouse man, delivery driver, customer. That is a minimum of seven low-paid highly pressurised people expected to care about your 'cherished' item.
New white glove delivery services which can operate with one or two drivers depending on the size of the packages differ in several ways. Normally, the number of people handling the packages is either one (a pair in the case of two man). They see the job through from end to end, collecting and delivering it right inside the customers home. The slight variations on that are where the collection and delivery are by the same firm at the same location, but split the responsibility for collection and delivery. Either way, the involvement with the end customer is a close interaction and any problem with loss, damage or carelessness is handled by a face to face encounter with a customer who cares. Guess what, drivers do not like upset customers. Focusing on serveral areas of best practice that include training for handling and customer service coupled with time inside the customers home, where any dissatifaction would be hard to ignore, results in industry bench mark standards of service and almost eliminates damage.
The basic model can be enhanced. In many cases the home delivery is backed up with a storage service. The end of the manufacturing process delivers the goods to the distribution point. There is inspection prior to dispatch and minimal opportunity for damage.
Online retailers are increasingly choosing white glove services that cost a little more, typically £25 for one man and £35 for two man per delivery with additional cost for items bigger than about 1 x 0.5 x 0.5 metres compared with about £10 and £20 for the equivalent size overnight post style delivery. They do so because their reputation matters and they can add in valued services like, delivery to room of choice rather than the door step, packaging waste removal, old product removal and disposal, and assembly.
Evidence for the increasing demand for home delivery is the UK 'white van' population growing by 38% to over 3.2 million in the past 10 years. Even through the so called credit crunch, whilst sales of new cars has dropped and is yet to recover, sales and new leases of light vans are buoyant.
