To Mask, or Not To Mask?
What are CPAP Masks and what can they offer a patient seeking ongoing relief? It's an important question.
First, perhaps, it will be helpful to explain the condition treated by continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines, to demystify that conglomeration of symptoms known as sleep apnea. There are two major types, Central and Obstructive. Central reflects a signal problem within the brain, and as such it is far rarer a cause for serious pauses in breathing while asleep. Obstructive, the more common variety, often occurs as a side effect of being overweight, involves specifically an abnormal relaxation of muscles at the back of the throat and is marked by a series of secondary effects.
These include, but are not limited to, excessive daytime sleepiness, unusually loud snoring at night, dry mouth and sore throat upon waking, headaches, frequent urination, and most importantly, episodes of breathing cessation.
This stoppage can last only a few moments, but it is the overriding cause of alarm. Even a short lack of air can seriously affect oxygen saturation in the blood, making for another set of problems which in the extreme can be life-threatening.
The obvious course, for many, is to take steps in the direction of serious weight loss. In the long run, this can be a cure, since the body will readjust to a more optimal throat shape, and begin regulating itself as it is meant to do. This process, however, although an excellent idea in general, does not address the level of acute distress presented.
Enter the CPAP mask, in all its variation. The goal, to be sure, is to replace the function of the muscles which normally support the uvula and soft palate, and most of the models available go directly to this difficulty. An astonishing array of modalities exist, from the more traditional Nasal and Nasal Pillow to the Oral and the Hybrid. The sheer number can be daunting, so while some research is warranted it must be underscored that a doctor should also advise based on individual needs.
More of the variants, however, do tend to operate on one specific premise. Headgear, of some sort, supports an air tube, the central purpose of which is to keep the back of the throat open and available for oxygen. Issues of sealing and comfort provide the demand for multiple forms, but the purpose and result are meant to merge in the end.
Treatment of apnea, therefore, can take many forms, including drugs and lifestyle changes, but the use of CPAP machines is often quite helpful.
