How do I verify connection of power to a wire with a volt meter?
I will be replacing my turn signals and am trying to figure out which wire is connected to the running light when signals arent operating and just on. With ignition on and power running through the wire that I'm looking for how would I test it with my meter is it best to find the most bare naked end at the terminal or load(where wire is visible) or should I test it by taking a small portion of insulation off to get to the wire and test it and just sealing it back up after that?
I am assuming you are talking about turn signals on your car in which case it is easiest to put the negative or black wire to earth and use the red to touch the bare wires you wish to test. Make sure your earth is a good one. To test wires that are insulated stick a needle or pin through the insulation, that way you do not need to do tape repairs. Where there are a lot of cables together and a chance of the probe shorting terminals, wrap tape around all but the probe tip. Sharpening it can help too. Wear safety glasses in case one of those shorts take place. Luck.
