A Pulse oximeter is a instrument with the purpose of measuring oxygenation of blood by measuring the oxygen percentage in haemoglobin. It is usually attached to the lobe of the ear or fingertip and records the flow of blood past a probe in the unit. Some units make a sound or graph which coincides with the pulse beat.
650nm & 805nm are the wavelengths of light usually utilized in an oximeter's probe to record absorption and saturation of the haemoglobin in a patient's blood. Oxygenation in the blood is measured by this saturation level measured. Slow blood flow may introduce problems in normal pulse oximeter functions due to the units mechanism of measuring blood flow.
Inaccuracy in a pulse oximeter may be caused by a variety of things. Vasoconstriction and Venous congestion are common causes of mis-readings. Bright overhead lights and nail varnish can also be the culprit for false results. The existence of carbo-xyhamoglobin (methaemglobin) in the blood can confuse a pulse oximeter because they have difficulty distinguishing between haemoglobin types.
When under anaesthesia, pulse oximeters are used to monitor oxygenation and pulse rates. During mechanical ventilation and other intensive care situations, pulse oximeters have been used to great success in the detection of oxygenation related problems before they are physically realized. Additionally, oximetry is used to analyze whether oxygen therapy is necessary in a patient. Alerting users of a state of hypoxia is also another helpful usage.
A pulse oximeter is used to monitor oxygenation. However, it cannot measure the metabolism of oxygen. For oxygen metabolism, you must measure carbon dioxide levels.
Pilots flying in a non-pressurized airplanes use portable pulse oximeters to measure the amount of supplemental oxygen that is required, if required. In situations where oxygen levels may decrease, such as high altitudes and vigorous exercise, portable pulse oximeters have been very useful. People like mountain climbers and professional athletes have utilized these portable oximeters for this purpose.
Pulse oximeter applications have increased and data obtained from them has been used to create new uses. Blood volume loss is one such new realization of the capabilities of a pulse oximeter. An algorithm has been devised over eyars of experimentation which makes use of blood oxygenation and haemoglobin absorption levels to yield blood volume measurements.
