i connected the two sideways pins (note i am using a 12 volt krly2012 relay) to power. the electromagnet pulled the two flaps to the other side which i assume completes the circuit. i think that for example if you had two LEDs you could switch between the two. but the flaps only switch direction when the magnet is turned on. so how would you switch flaps without pulling wires out or the battery (note i am using a breadboard). and also what is the difference between that and a SPDT/DPDT switch.by that i mean that why would you use a (more expensive) relay when you could use either of those.
Single pole relay (spdt) will control only one circuit while a double throw (dpdt) can control two circuits (one with power on the relay and the other one when the relay is relaxed). It depends on what you are trying to accomplish as to which one you can use - the dpdt relay can replace the spdt relay, but not the other way around.
For two led's - you will need a dpdt relay - one led will light when the relay is activated and other will light when the relay is relaxed.
