Learn How to Optimize Fetal Brain Development
What if I told you science has finally figured out that the way to optimize fetal brain development is through having the expectant mother supplement her diet with fish oil? DHA is the omega-3 essential fatty acid that plays the biggest role when it comes to cognitive development, but EPA also plays a role. Let’s look at these two fatty acids, and see just what they can do to make your child the best that he or she can be.
DHA is a substance that can be found in a mother’s breast milk, and the concentrations of this fatty acid can be made greater if the mother adds fish to her diet. Doctor’s are now telling expectant mother’s that they need to increase the amount of DHA in there diet’s in order to maximize the development of there children’s cognitive and visual skills. There are better ways to do this then by eating fish, but we’ll get to that later.
The way that DPA affects fetal brain development is that it enhances visual acuity, hand and eye coordination, problem solving ability, and reasoning processes. Studies have shown that the children of mother’s that supplemented their diets with omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy regularly scored far higher than their non-supplemented peers in both mental processing, and motor skills.
DHA has also been linked to a lower risk of depression, aggression, ADHD (Attention Deficit- Hyperactivity Disorder), and it improves memory and learning. This is why many medical professionals argue that it is a sound idea to continue supplementing your child’s diet with omega fatty acids. Continued use almost guarantees proper brain function.
EPA is the other omega-3 fatty acid that has been shown to have an effect on fetal brain development. It has been shown to have a preventative affect when it comes to mental disorders, such as schizophrenia. EPA has also proven beneficial in the prevention and treatment of depression and suicidal behavior, which are two things that have been proven to affect some adolescents.
Now, back to why I stated that there are better options for obtaining your omega fatty acids that by eating fish. What your body primarily needs for a developing fetus is DHA, but the omega fatty acid that is present in abundance in fish is EPA. So, in order to get the amount of DHA in your diet that you need, you would have to eat far more fish per week than is customarily recommended.
While this would help fetal brain development, it could actually endanger the health of you and the baby. This is because the toxins that fish consume accumulate in the meat of the fish, and so by eating more fish your body is taking in far more toxins. One way to guarantee that you are getting the correct ratio of DHA to EPA and that toxin levels are miniscule is to supplement your diet with high quality fish oil.
