A Steel Locking Mailbox Prevents Mail Theft Once and Forever

With the growing incidence of mail theft experienced in every clime today, many savvy people are investing in locking mailboxes. Reports from the Postal Service Inspectors and law enforcement agencies admit that mail theft is a major concern. There are so few arrests and convictions being reported.

You may ask "Why is that?" The crime of mail theft is easy to accomplish. Thieves act quickly. Some pilfer mail in a targeted area and then are off to another state or region immediately.  Unless physical evidence is discovered, cases of mail theft just don't get prosecuted.

1.       Never place outgoing mail in the mailbox for the carrier to collect.

3.       Listen for that mail truck to come down the block.

4.       Run out and gather up your mail right away.

5.       Go through it immediately.

6.       Shred any mail piece with your name and address and account number on it.

7.       Throw into the trash only what mail does not identify you.

8.       Call any merchant or credit card company to find out just when to expect the new card to arrive in the mailbox.

9.       Call them again if the card does not arrive as expected.

10.   Keep an eye out for the replacement bank checks you have ordered.

11.   Be sure you have correct information about when to expect the new driver's license.

12.   Watch out for the Social Security replacement card and hide it as soon as you get it.

13.   Lock up personal information such as birth certificates, insurance policies, health insurance policies and statements.

14.   Immediately destroy those credit card offers and checks that bear your name.

15.   Know when that postal carrier is due to deliver.  Of course he or she may be having a day off. The substitute will likely have a different schedule.

May I recommend an additional solution which will cut down on some of your need to be vigilant about your mail delivery? There is a way to avoid watching for the mail carrier and looking out for expected credit cards and items which thieves wish to steal.

Does anyone have information about a large safe in the city of Carcassonne, France? It has a steel rod lock.?

My Grandfather, a retired Lt. Col. in the US Army, told me about this safe he saw in the French city of Carcassonne. It is about 8 feet high and 4 feet wide. It has a combination lock made up of steel rods. He discovered this at the end of World War II, when he was on leave in the city. I'd like to find out more information about the safe and what it's contents are. Thanks!
It wasn't in a building, which is what makes it so interesting to me. It was just this huge safe/vault type thing outside. It was either against or on a wall. I wish I knew a street, or "neighborhood" but that is where I'm stumped. Thanks for the help!
