I have a 06 harley twin cam b88 w/30,000 on the motor. the motor started nocking on me when it's started?

and gets quieter as it warms then comes back then goes! I dont get it? what is changed to the motor is S&S gear to gear cams,lifters,adj push rods,all S&S stuff. I replaced the compensator and have a good torque on it so I know It's not that, sound is hard to locate but kinda comes from center jug area..not really from bottom area however that means nothing the way the sound traveles in these motors,like when the compensator loosened up on me, the only way I could tell it was the comp. was how the knock got louder when motor was shut down. but this knock has me. I even used the
stethoscope and a steel bar to locate the knock. So if I were to guess at this point I'm inclined to say
piston slap,a bad wrist pin but other than that I don't have a clue The knock comes and goes depends on the heat mostly.I ran it up the freeway for 30 min. and when I pulled over to hear the noise was not there. cools down It's there.Any help about this I would really appreciate it.

My first question is...did you have the injection TUNED after all the engine mods, if so, which tuner was used, and was it DYNO tuned or just a map loaded in???

I ask this because ALOT of people don't and this causes the motor to run EXCEPTIONALLY lean, which overheats and accelerates premature wear.

Also..what oils are you running???

Piston slap is a definite possibility, along with a faulty lifter being another possibility, another simple possibility is simply a loose primary chain. And yet another possiblility is the compensator, you say it has "good torque", did you actually torque it to 150 ft/lbs as per the manual and did you THOROUGHLY degrease (ie use Brake Clean) on the threads and apply a liberal amount of RED LOCTITE to the threads and allow the loctite to cure???...compensators are notorious for coming loose...this is VERY VERY bad for gear drive cams if you didn't install the Screamin Eagle Lefdt crank Timken bearing upgrade kit. On 04-later TC's, the left crank bearing is a straight roller bearing, the compensator is what sets and holds crank end-play, ALL pre-04's use 2 tapered Timken bearings with matching machined spacers to set and hold end-play....if the 04-later compensator comes loose, the crank end play increases dramatically and can cause the cam gears to bind and grenade out of the case = destroyed engine!!!

Some info on injection tuners....
Harley'sStage 1 Download is SPECIFICALLY designed by Harley for THEIR air cleaner and SLIP ON mufflers only. ANY deviation from this, and the download is less than optimal. There is a very high probability you will get alot of exhaust popping and backfiring on engine decel. If you want it tuned RIGHT, get the Screamin Eagle Super Tuner and have the bike dyno tuned. The diference between the Stage 1 and a TUNED Super Tuner is like night and day, you will have better performance and fuel economy combined. It is pricey to have this done though, but I have always believed that you get what you pay for. The Super Tuner runs about $450 and tuning is usually around $250-350. With the Stage 1, if you pay the $200 and aren't happy, you're screwed, you lost the $200, and will have to have the Tuner added and then tuned, also the Stage 1 will not allow for any changes made in the future, with the Tuner, if you make changes again in the future, just have it re-tuned.

Stay away from the Power Commanders and Fuel Paks, etc, for Harleys, they are pretty much junk. The Super Tuner (SEST), I hate to say, is almost twice as expensive at $460 plus the cost of tuning, BUT, it is 100% fully tuneable for everything control of the ECM and does not require a big box and bulky wire harness to be mounted to the bike, it is simply an interface that reprograms the stock ECM, once remapped, it is removed and stored in a safe place (SEST's, once installed on a bike, are "married" to that bike and will not work on any other bike, so do not look at buying a used one, it won't work. The Power Commanders and Fuel Pak ONLY control fuel and maybe rev-limit, the SEST will adjust fuel, timing advance and curve, rev limit, engine decel enleanment to eliminate backfiring and popping, allow for engine size changes,, injector changes, and so on. The difference between a bike tuned with a Pwr Comm and an SEST is like night and day, generally you can expect about 5-10 more hp/tq from an SEST than a Pwr Comm.

Here are my recommendations on oils...
As much I love HD....I hate to say it, but HD doesn't know SH*T about synthetic oil. THE BEST 3 SYNTHETICS FOR A HARLEY ARE......#1-AMSOIL, #2-LUCAS, #3-MOBIL1(which is recommended by S&S). I have been working on HD's and building performance engines, drag racing and dyno tuning for 20 years and have been running Amsoil for years.
FIRST OFF.........DO NOT RUN HD SYN3.....IT'S JUNK.........I AM A CERTIFIED HD TECH, AND I WILL TELL YOU FIRST HAND....HD DOESN'T KNOW JACK ABOUT OILS!!!!!!!!!
It is fine to run the same engine oil in the primary. For the trans....DO NOT listen to HD and use 20/50...even Amsoil says their 20/50 is ok for the trans...NOT!!!....RED LINE SHOCKPROOF TRANS OIL is the BEST oil to run!!!...It WILL make it run and shift smoother and quieter and will run cooler, AND is good for 20k miles between changes.
