Stethoscope Light

An Appraisal Of Littman Stethoscopes
Dr Littmann, a recognized heart doctor, innovator, and med school professor, greatly improved the listening qualities of stethoscopes in 1963. The doctor thought it was important to have a stethoscope with two bells, an open side used to listen to low pitch sound waves and a shut, flat chestpiece to pick up high sounds. The Drs' system let doctors to get quicker, more accurate diagnostics on patient's internal body sounds. Instead of only being able to be conscious of the lower or high pitched sounds exclusively, Drs were able to listen to both frequencies with a single stethoscope. Littman Stethoscopes have evolved tellingly through the years. Littman Stethoscopes are marvelous for physical assessment and for cardiology.
There are several types of Littman stethoscopes in the market today. 3M bought Dr. Littman's Cardiosonics, Inc. company in 1967, keeping him on as a top consultant and creator. There are now regular acoustic stethoscopes and electronic stethoscopes that deliver even greater augmentation. One of the great improvements on the original device was the invention of the tunable stethoscope. A tunable stethoscope has the diaphragm and bell on a single chestpiece instead of two. a doctor presses lightly the bell or diaphragm to the skin of the pt to use the bell to hear low frequency body sounds. Nurses who want to hear for the higher frequency sounds can apply additional compression to the chestpiece, which will flatten it and makes a traditional diaphragm.
Littman stethoscopes are used by nurses and other medical professionals who want the biggest amount of accurateness and sound amplification from their stethoscope. While nurses around the world trust Littman stethoscopes, general practitioners use them for routine physical exams as well.
3M's stethocopes are esteemed for their accuracy, dependability, and good feeling for both the patient and the doctor. There are several stethoscope models applicable that are built for application in many settings, from the pediatricians office to the operating room.

Do real doctors actually do the following...?
I've seen in television shows whereby doctors perform certain procedures and I am curious about them and whether they are indeed performed in real life. If so, what is the purpose?
1) Lift up an eyelid and flash a light in front of a patient's eye (usually the patient is unconscious)
2) Listen using the stethoscope. Obviously, this is true. But are there any fixed spots which doctors will listen to?
3) I've been told that in most conditions, a surgery should not result in any significant bloodless as surgeons are able to cut through the body without damaging major blood passages. Is this actually true?
1) Yes they do this to check if pupils are dilating properly. If they are this is good, but if they don't dilate or dilate out of synch you might have concussion.
2) Yes they definately do this. There are a few things they listen to:
Heart, for heart mumurs [you should hear a nice lub dub, lub dub of the valves slamming shut, but if you hear ssshhhlup dup, sshhhlup dub, this is called a heart mumur and means one of the valves isn't closing which can be very bad]
Lungs, for chest infections. You should hear a nice smooth windy noise, but excessive raspiness is bad, and crackling bad because it might mean you have excess fluid in your lungs.
Stomach and abdomen, your tummy should make occassional gurgling noises. If it doesnt you could have a paralysed intestine which is actually very bad.
Sometimes they listen to joints, if they can hear anything scrape or crunch then that's not so good.
Taking blood pressure, they put a sleeve over your arm and tuck the steth in the crook of your elbow. They pump untill they can't hear your pulse, read the pressure, and then let the pressue out untill they begin to hear it again.
3) Yep you can avoid the biggies. The big ones run through known parts of your body so if you are delicate you can avoid them. Of course every body is different and if you make a mistake you can nick some important ones with your scalpel but this doesnt happen often. Also, I don't know about humans but certainly in vetenary surgery they try to tease tissues apart with their hands, tissues will rip around blood vessels but a knife will cut through them. By doing this you loose less blood and spee recovery time.
