Pain of Teeth Whitening
If you're thinking about getting your teeth whitened, check this out. My son just got his braces off and his mother is planning on giving him some items she got in the mail. Is this safe? How will he react to the contents of the teeth whitening system? Here are the top 5 questions most people ask about teeth whitening.
Why are teeth sore after whitening? It takes a lot of time for stains to form because the tubes in the teeth get plugged up with organic matter. If they were wide open, your teeth would be terribly sensitive to temperature changes. Bleaching agents need to remove the plugs so they can penetrate to the inner layer of your teeth. The active ingredient loses effectiveness quickly, so no need to worry that you're trapping harmful chemicals inside. After some time (usually a couple of weeks), the plugs return.
This is why it's common for teeth to become sensitive during whitening and why the discomfort subsides. Sensitivity is the number one side-effect that gives teeth whitening a bad rap, and makes people think it's doing permanent harm. The strength of the whitening agent, application and how long the teeth are exposed to the treatment are all factors in sensitivity. Talk to your dentist first if you're worried about sensitivity.
How much does laser teeth whitening cost? The most popular dental whitening procedure known as laser bleaching consists of the application of a concentrated peroxide gel spread onto your teeth, and for the next hour you sit in a dental chair with your mouth wide open, while a special light (usually argon) is shined onto the paste which chemically reacts with the peroxide to complete the bleaching process in as short a time period as possible.
This procedure does work; however, the downside is that you pay $500 - $1,000 (at least for the good dental whitening!). You still need to either come back 6 months later for a touch up, or you're given some take home bleaching items.
How safe is teeth whitening? Teeth whitening are a safe and harmless treatment that almost anyone can afford. With that said, everyone should at least consult with a dentist to be sure they have healthy teeth before they start. It is important to discuss the various products and whitening technologies available. The two that are available are home-whitening or whitening at the dentist's office. You may decide to use an over-the-counter product because it's more affordable. Your dentist may try more than one product before finding the one that gives you maximum results with minimum sensitivity.
Which teeth whitening strategies really work? The best whiteners are Crest Night Effects do-it-yourself or the in-office bleaching and other dental techniques. The Crest Night Effects was tested by Good Housekeeping testers. They applied paint-on gel to their teeth right before bed for 14 nights. LiquidStrip Technology is used which holds the whitening agent to the teeth. The whitening gel forms a LiquidStrip coating on the teeth. It works to remove stains and loosen stain-causing buildup. In the morning, just brush. Night Effects was found to lighten teeth from two to five shades.
Whitener strips are next in line. Crest Whitestrips and Colgate Simply White, lightened teeth up to three shades. Lastly, some over-the-counter products (actually at the checkout stand) are teeth-whitening gums; Trident White and Aquafresh, each can lighten teeth up to one shade.
What are some teeth whitening secrets?
Here are a few more teeth whitening secrets:
1. Water is in itself an amazing cleaner and it helps in cleaning your mouth and your teeth, rinse after meals, drink lots of water after every meal.
2. Gargle with apple cider vinegar every morning. A teaspoon of apple cider vinegar mixed with a glass of water becomes a natural and effective mouthwash.
3. Lemon is a natural bleaching agent; don't overdo it.
4. Mix a little amount of salt and lime juice and then clean your teeth with this mixture in the morning as well as after dinner.
5. There is one more method; it is rubbing strawberries on your teeth. Yes, strawberries. Strawberries contain an enzyme which can help to whiten discolored teeth!
How long does teeth whitening last? It takes twelve to eighteen months to re-stain but on a sliding scale as the change is slow and the pores of the enamel start retaining the staining teeth become discolored again.
Depending on whether you opt for bleaching trays or the light based whitening system will change how you manage the ongoing maintenance of your smile. Using a maintenance product every few weeks ensures the teeth will stay white. For owners of the dentist made trays you can use the system every six to eight weeks for a few hours to remove any residual staining and teeth will stay white all year round. Check with your dentist though. For those with the laser system, every twelve or twenty four months will keep the teeth looking white and healthy.

Biology is the closest A-level subject to the kind of knowledge you need for dentistry or medicine. Its all about living things. Physics is not a substitute for biology, and certainly not if the university is specifically requesting biology.
