Pipets used for the transfer of samples of solutions are always rinsed with a small portion of the solution to be dispensed with the pipet before the actual sample is taken.
Calculate the percentage error likely to arise in an experiment if 1-mL, 5-mL, and 10-mL pipets are used for transfer and each pipet contains 5 drops of water adhering to the inside of the barrel. A single drop of water has a volume of approximately 0.05 mL.
Every time I try to solve this, I get confuseddddd.
To calculate percent error you need to calculate the difference between the actual value and your value, then divide it by the actual value.
I will do the first one for you, and I guarantee you will be able to do the second and third one.
So the first one is a pipette meant for transferring 1 mL. When you are transferring a solution, you write down that you are transferring 1mL of solution. However, since there is already .25 mL of water (5 drops of .05mL is .25 mL of water) you are REALLY only transferring .75 mL of the solution. Therefore using the percent error equation your value would be 1mL and actual value would be .75 mL. The difference of these two would be .25 mL and divided by the actual value .75 mL would give you the answer as 33.33% error.
The second one you basically calculate the actual value and find the difference between that and your value (this is given to you because you wrote down that the pipette is 5 mL). Then divide it by the actual value.
Same thing with the third one.
