Job Description Of Veterinary Technicians
Veterinary Technicians are in high demand and call for a great deal of skill and intelligence. A successful veterinarian almost constantly stands on the shoulders of a great technician. Vet techs do everything from vaccinations to euthanasia, and, like the nurse practitioners in a doctors office, are almost as experienced as the veterinarian in some cases.
The function of the vet tech is to help the licensed veterinarian in their practice. This can mean almost anything, but the fundamental of these tasks are: restraining animals; preparing instruments, medicines and locations; cleaning up any mess; and providing outstanding customer service to clients. There are three types of vet tech specialties; one is the large animal field, which deals with livestock, as well as cats, dogs, and other household pets. Specializing in small animals means dealing only with household-sized pets and the smaller ones. Exotic vet techs deal with zoo animals and other odd patients, such as reptiles.
The importance of the vet tech cannot be overstated. An practiced tech can literally make the difference between life and death for the animal. With large animal and exotics, in particular, if you do not have the best experienced, most confident vet tech you can utilize, a veterinarian could even be risking his own life when treating the animals in need of care. If a horse is handled by an effective, calm and experienced vet tech, it is far less likely to become aggressive than with someone who is unsure of handling such a large and spirited animal. The tech needs to identify the habits, actions and minds of the animals they handle in order to successfully assist the veterinarian.
The probable for earning a decent living while practicing as a vet tech depends greatly on the success of the veterinarian the tech services. If you have a highly thriving, well-paid veterinarian, and the competition to get your job was stiff, you are far more likely to earn a profitable income. For the majority of entry-level vet techs, the salary will be less than glamorous. As is the case in so many jobs with animals, the forfeit is less than ideal. Vet techs who graduate from accredited programs with a degree in animal science or the veterinary technician field can insist more pay than those who do not have the specialized training.
Most veterinary technicians have a deep affection for animals, and this is the main reason for choosing their profession. Some have turn out to be vet techs because, for whatever reason, they did not finish a full veterinary program. The enjoyment of working as a vet tech comes from helping sick and injured animals, as well as helping pet owners, who are often in great agony over their animal's well-being. Do not go into the field of veterinary technician if you have hopes of earning a great income. Even the best vet techs never gross more than a standard living. The true calling of those who desire this as a career are those who are drawn to the care and treatment of animals.

College- Should I take music theory I? (not a music major)?
My career interest is currently veterinary medicine, but I have a keen interest in music (I play instruments) and can understand basic theory. Music theory 1 I believe could count as an elective, but I wonder would theory 1 really enhance my understanding/knowledge of music theory? The course description says that if you aren't a music minor/major you must get special permission from the instructor... is it worth taking?
If you need permission from a department head, I'd wager that it's probably a fairly intensive course, and therefore worth your while to take it.
